Le nom est aujourd'hui porté au Québec. Il peut désigner celui qui est originaire de Préfontaines, commune du Loiret, ou de divers autres hameaux ou lieux-dits ainsi appelés. La commune du Loiret est citée vers 1100 sous la forme (de) Probato Fonte, sans doute avec le sens de 'bonne fontaine' (autre possibilité : la fontaine de Probatus, nom d'homme latin).
